How to Customize Customer Login Redirect

Hi all,

This seems like a no-brainer. For as long as I can remember, our site has always redirected our customers to the checkout screen after they enter their login information. Has anyone got any idea as to how I can make the landing page custom, such as the last page they were viewing? I'd like to stay away from a scripting solution as our templates are already slow enough with all the javascript  we've had to pack into them.

I think it's just a little bit pushy to rush our customers to the checkout screen, and it's not particularly smart to do so if they don't have any items added to their cart yet !
