Adding a refundable deposit for certain item in webstore.

We need to add a deposit for certain items in our webstore. This deposit is refundable once a we receive the bad part.
What would be ideal for us is, when a customer selects an item that involves return of bad part, the deposit should automatically added to the shopping cart along with the item.
What is the best way to do this?
