Length of Information Item Fields

I know this sounds like a silly question, but what is the maximum number of characters permitted in the Detailed Description field of an Information Item. The on screen help box says 4,000, but I have just created one with over 9,000 characters that seems to save and work OK.  In an effort to reduce the number of levels in our online customer help screens, it would help planning if I knew how large I could make these items.
