Out of stock inventory not getting removed from webstore

We have our web site set to remove items when they are no longer in stock.  Right now that isn't happening.  If someone buys something, a sales order is created.  That used to remove the item from the store.   Now the item isn't removed from the store until fullfilment happens. 

How do I make sure that items committed on sales orders count towards the web site show/hide criteria?

Update: Support is looking at this now but I would love some feedback on the process part of the problem.  Am I correct in assuming that items on sales orders would normally be counted as committed?
