Shopping cart recovery strategy

Hi everybody,

I'd like to create an automatic system to recover some of our abandoned shopping carts.  This should be do-able with a saved search alert directed at customers that abandon their carts during checkout. 

A simple email, pehaps with a questionaire would go a long way to winning some customers back right away and help us understand what we can improve in the long run.

Can anyone come up with the criteria for a search that would work?  I'm having trouble finding something that will select customers that have bailed during checkout.

Edit:  Our abandoned cart % for November so far is 33.63% and abandoned checkout is 5.06%
