Please, How to automatically inactivate a category with no items?

Hi,

Unfortunately NetSuite does not have the functionality of inactivating a category automatically when there are no items for that particular category. The problem is that our customers end up in an empty page with no warnings or anything. If that can't be done, how would I add a message saying "No items in stock" or something similar to that? Any help is greatly appreciated. I heard that I need to write SuiteScript for this functionality. Any idea of what property to be used?
