After shopper adds an item to the cart, stay on the same page

There is an option in Website Setup that you can either stay on the same page or show shopping cart After shopper adds an item to the cart.

When we select stay on the same page, the page looks like it just refreshed but there is no note or anything saying what happened.

Is there a way that every time the item is added to the shopping cart a note comes up saying that the item has been added to the shopping cart or momentarily show the shopping cart?
