You are x amount away from free shipping script

On our webstore, once a customer spends $35.00, they get free shipping. We are frequently getting customers who order $30 and pay $6 for shipping. I would like to create a script to let them know in their cart that they only need $5 to qualify for free shipping. Has anyone done this? I wrote a simple js file, but not exactly sure where to implement this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
