Speeding up Checkout and login load times

On our site the whole checkout process takes a long time due to the pages loading slowly. The main concern is the log in process whether creating a new account or using an existing account. When a customer already has an item in the cart, proceeds to checkout and logs in with an existing account it takes a long time for the next page to load.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on speeding up the load times and checkout process?
