NS Shopping Cart - First & Last Name Requirement

We have just launched our website and are working thru the bugs.  I am not a web developer - our hired developers - non NS - cannot figure out how to require that customers put in a first name and a last name during check out.  I can't imagine this is a difficult one - anyone else see this before and can you share how to require this during checkout?
