Canonical URL in the Homepage

I just have to shake my head at this one.  We have been trying to clean up our canonical link tags within our entire site and while that's been a project based on our own past mistakes, this one just takes the cake.  Within the "Meta Tag HTML" field of our home page tab, we have a simple, humble link tag;

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.mydomain.com/" />


What's hilarious is what gets sent to the client when you visit our site;

<link rel="canonical" href="/" />


Okay, let's try doing a tag substitution... within our Meta Tag HTML;
