How to make custom item fields searchable on a sitebuilder site?

We are using custom item fields to populate data like supplier part numbers and bar codes but if you go to our website and enter a supplier part number intothe search box it does not produce any results. I have the "Global Search" attribute checked but it does not sem to make any difference. Is there a solution to this problem?
