Integrating Commerce Categories

We maintain our SCA Commerce Categories in our PIM system.  I am looking at a better way to integrate the two systems for commerce categories that custom records and suitescript.  I would like to plug it into our API process if possible.  I reviewed the API WSDL and but the record type for Commerce Category is not an acceptable value.  I see with the 2018.1 release Commerce Categories are being added to the CSV import.  Will Commerce Categories be available through the API as well?  Also, are they going to be available through ODBC connector so I can compare difference
