Online Matrix Items with Item Option Filtering?

I'm trying to set up a matrix item for the first time and have the options available on a Suitecommerce web site.  So far so good.  Only some of the option combinations exist, but the fields on the option fields on the website don't seem to relate to each other.  For example, if red t-shirts are only available in medium, when the user chooses the red color option then the size option should update to only display medium.  It seems like that is the expected behavior in Netsuite.

Am I wrong in my understanding of how matrix items should work?   In my testing, the customer sees an "unavailable options" message if they try to add the item (red, large) to the cart.  Not very user-friendly.
