Exempt field in tax code setup - what is it?

I've just noticed in the tax code setup that there's a tick box for 'exempt' but there is no contextual help yet and no mention of it in the global help.  Does anyone know what it is?

As a UK charity we sell various products and services that are VAT exempt - this makes our VAT returns very complicated - will this tick box help with this?
