Who moved my mass update?

With apologies to the author of Who moved my Cheese how do I get mass updates to be consistent. 

A month ago I set up a mass update to update a custom field.  Now in the past couple of weeks, the mass updated has failed each night.  I notice that the field I was updating is no longer available as an option on the Mass Updates Fields tab.

Are their field criteria that I need to set to have a field available to a amass update?  In this case I am working on Customer records.
