Paycheck vs Paycheck Journal

Does anybody know the difference between 'paycheck' and 'paycheck journal'? We are creating our own payroll system external to netsuite and we are able to insert data into the paycheck journal. But when we are trying to search 'using save search', we can only see the paycheck record. And in the paycheck record we can not see any of the data in the paycheck journal? Is there a step i need to do before i can create the paychecK?
