Using Partners vs. Sale Reps to calculate commissions

We use independent sales reps. I'm about to set up the sales commission tracking system in NS and I'm trying to figure out whether it is better to set these reps up as Sale Reps or as Partners.
As far as I can see, the functionality is identical when it comes to setting up commission schedules and whatnot. But does anyone have experience with this? Is one way better than the other?
