Crediting a COGS account

We have a customer who bought quantity 30 of an item.  We need to credit them for parts of some of the items but not the whole unit.  When we go to credit the invoice we want to be able to credit the COGS account not the actual item so it doesn't mess with the inventory.  What is the best practice for this?
