creating buy over $200 get a free item script

I'm trying to create a scriptable cart script that will add a free item (maximum 1) to orders over a certain $ amount. I've started with two of the sample scripts in the help with limited success. I am able to test for the amount and display a message if the order is over or under the amount. If I manually add the free item to the cart I am able to see the line and quantity in the cart. That is where my success has ended.

I tried using the functions in the BOGO script to add the item if the total is over $200 but it kills my cart. I'm going right off the sample but having no luck. Can anyone see if I'm doing something completely wrong or should I not be using NS examples as learning aids? I'm hoping I am just overlooking something simple.

Howdy, Stranger!
