nlapiSetLineItemMandatory - Has anyone used successfully?

I am trying to set a column mandatory on the expense sublist of an expense report. According to the API list, nlapiSetLineItemMandatory has been available since 2009.2. Has anyone successfully used this? I have worked around this by adding line validation, but of course the label does not have the orange asterisk.

In the Console, nlapiSetLineItemMandatory returns: function nlapiSetLineItemMandatory(type,fldnam,required,lin enum) which is interesting.
