Meta Tag HTML - Input Formatting

In the field “Meta Tag HTML” found under categories, items and elsewhere, do I need to input actual snippets HTML code; <Meta name=”description” content=”This is my meta information for this item.”> or can I simply enter as plain text "This is my meta information for this item" which NS will then format as HTML and place in the page header?
