Canonical tags on paginated item lists

Hi,

We are using a Pre-Denali version of SCA and currently each of our pages (paginated) from our item lists gets a canonical tag similar to this...

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.ourwebsite.com/category?page=2"/>



Our SEO consultant told us this is hurting our page ranking. Im just wondering if this same issue is happening on the later versions of SCA, and if anyone has found a workaround for this?
