Technical product info - how to associate with inventory item?

We have products that have technical information we'd like to display with them. How do we associate this with the item, beyond the store, feature, and detailed descriptions we've already entered in the item itself? Can we use the custom fields? If so, how do we get this information to display in the web store? We are using the WSDK/External catalog site feature.

I've been wading through the online documentation for the custom fields, but it's a real time-sink, and I'd love some short cut info on this!
