add to cart via hyperlink versus a button

Need some guidance on this. I will or will be having a wsdk version. Is it possible to add to cart via  a hyperlink on the item versus having a quantity and add to cart button. I'm a newbie on this and any suggestions would be great. Reason I ask if that if I have the add button via  hyperlink versus a button that cuts down on displaying each and ever item with an add to cart button versus
