Is there a way to retrieve the alt tag for an image programmatically?

So I am using some custom image fields to display product color swatches, and I want to grab the alt tag for the product color swatch image - is there a way to do this? Here is a snippet of my code:

<img width='80' height='80' src='<%=getCurrentAttribute('item','custitemswatch1')%>' alt=''>

So 'custitemswatch1' is the custom image field and I want to display the alt tag that is associated with that image field, but I don't know how?
