Retrieving the number of items in category

Hello,

Does anyone know how I can retrieve the NUMBER OF ITEMS in a CATEGORY?
  I need the count of total items in order to create a pagination string url(using the range).[COLOR=#000000][FONT=Arial] (range=from,to,of) OF being the total category of items

I would use the default pagination in layouts but it is hard to manipulate the appearance and the fact that it is warped in a table tag. Does any one have any possible suggestions.
