Mont Blanc - Parent Categories showing sub-category items

On our site we have a Category (with no items) and we have some subcategories of that category. The subcategory has items within it. The subcategory shows a list of the products. This is expected, but what is strange is that the parent category also shows the items even though the parent category has no items listed within it.

Is this an expected behavior? If not, how does one go about correcting it?
