How to get number of days between two custom dates

Hi All,
I had custom fields of type date called "start_date" and "end_date" as column fields  in my sale order.
Now i want an another field called total_days which calculates number of days between end_date and start_date.
I am struggling using formula but i am not getting.
so please help me with that.
