How to add search to custom center category?

the title explains it all.  i want to add a saved search to a custom center category.  i have tried w/ a custom report center, custom list center, etc.

all my saved reports are available to add, but none of my saved searches are there.  is there a particular box you must check off on saved searches to do this?  can you do this?  if so, how?!
