Commission Calculation Issue

We are adding a date to a custom line item field of Sales Orders that are in Billed status and noticed that commissions are being recalculated as a result of this edit. The edits are non-GL impacting and the date is only for reporting purposes.
In some cases where the commissions are being recalculated, the commission schedule has been previously marked inactive. My understanding of inactive is that the record cannot be systemically utilized. Also, we have not set plans or schedules to be recalculated.
Not knowing what is the root cause for triggering the commission recalculations, I am wondering if anyone has experienced this issue?
