Possible to convert Inventory Item to Assembly?

I have to ask, but I think I may already know the answer...

Can I take an existing Inventory Item and convert it to an Assembly made up of raw material components?  I'd prefer to not lose any sales History on this existing item.  I will be attempting to use assemblies to give me a better picture of inventory of raw materials that make up a Boxed Software that we sell.

Boxed software consists of the following raw material components:

1. Box
2. CD Media
3. Manual
4. CD Sleeve with serial # printed on it
5. (possibly a sticker indicating version)
