Control the order of Matrix options

(hypothetical data)
I'm trying to create an item matrix with two option lists;
color
size

When I create the matrix it uses size-color.  So instead of MyItem-Red-Lg I get MyItem-Lg-Red.

My actual matrix item will be built from 5 option lists and the order of the option components is very important.  Is there a way to control this?
