Class vs Department

When should Class and Department be used? They seem to be used interchangeably. Is there a best practice?

Is Classes and Department related to the own company rather than customer companies? I am thinking of using classes to classify our customer types (Merchant, Partners, Resellers) and Department for our own department (Sales, Service etc).
