Items reserved vs. sales orders

Wondering if there is anyway to to tie a line item on a purchase order to a sales order ? Need the item to automatically commit to the order upon receipt and for  it be readily apparent when viewing the sales order that an PO has been placed.
I know an item can be tied to a customer on a po, but not sure what functionality that allows for.
