How does Paypal work?

Hello,
I am looking for a merchant and payment gateway for an on-line business selling French ready-to-eat meals.

Paypal rates and integration with Netsuite sounds attractive but I am a bit confused on the process:
- When consumers check out, will they have to be re-directed to a paypal website?
- Do consumers need do have paypal login/password if they just pay with credit card?
- If they want to store their credit card details, does that mean that they will open a paypal account?
- Does Paypal tend to attract consumer because of their level of reliability or at the opposite frighten them to conclude the sale because they do not want to login/they don't have a paypal account?
