What "date" should be used to populate "Date" (trandate) on a Sales Order?

Our customers place Sales Orders 3-4 weeks in advance. Date/{trandate} has a impact on native NetSuite functionality (i.e. auto populates "Expected Ship Date", filter in reports, drives allocation, item fulfillment). What is best practice for this field to drive functionality?
