how to use substring function in email template

I'm trying to display a custom field content, but remove the first 11 characters.

I think substring should work in this scenario.

${transaction.createdfrom.custbody_opportunity?substring(12)} or ${transaction.createdfrom.custbody_opportunity[12]} both failed.

Error message is:

Can you please help me to check it? I appreciate your help in advance.
