Is there a way to use a field value with barcode 128 in item labels

Our client needs to use a alfanumeric barcode for their item labels. This is possible with code 128 but in netsuite that type of barcode is only given when the upc code field value is blank, and it only uses the Item Name/Number to create the bars. So there is a workaround to create the code with another field value?
