Why is Multiple Units of Measure feature required in Ship Central?

We are currently working through setup of Ship Central. The documentation lists "Multiple Units of Measure" as a required enabled feature for it to work. When setting it up, we realized we were no longer able to do inventory adjustments. After selecting the Subsidiary, the Adjustment Location and the Adjustment Account would not populate, and there was a new field for "unit" on the line level. If we disabled the Multiple Units of Measure field, we were again able to do an inventory adjustment. This leads me to a few questions as the documentation doesn't elaborate on these:

1) Why is multiple units of measure required for Ship Central?
