Inventory-related api in NetSuite's item returns null

Hi, I was wondering if our item api in NetSuite is not returning quantity related fields such as quantityonhand and quantityoncommited, do these need to be set to anything in NetSuite? I have seen this solution in this https://suiteanswers.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/85125/loc/en_US

I've seen the solution for this inside the link, but we are able to grab the Internal ID related values, so I'm not sure if I want to set it up according to that.
