Is it possible to change the display method when registering items in each transaction?

When registering an item in each transaction, the current display is "ITEM NAME/NUMBER+DISPLAY NAME/CODE", but is it possible to change this to "UPCCODE+DISPLAY NAME/CODE"? It would be helpful if this is possible with the standard functions, but is it also possible with a script?
