What is SyntaxError: Unexpected token '<', "<!DOCTYPE"...is not valid JSON?

We received this error in custom role while editing several employee records when clicking on SAVE. We clicked ok on the error and clicked saved again successfully. We haven't seen this error before. No scripts or workflow changes. Thoughts?
