Problem with vendor preferred in item

I have a problem when I merge vendors, the items in the secondary vendor are not attached to the primary vendor, even though I can see it on the item screen that it says preferred yes, but when I look internally at the preferred vendor field it comes up blank or null, I have several examples, and it is causing me a lot of problems in my reports designed to show my demand.
