NSC | Tips on Importing a Journal Entry with Multiple Debits and Credits

edited Aug 14, 2025 12:03PM in Accounting / ERP

Scenario

When importing Journal Entries using either the Single Entry Import feature or the Import Assistant, the system may return the following error message:

"The amounts in a journal entry must balance."

At first glance, this may suggest a discrepancy between the total debit and credit amounts. However, after verifying that:

  • The debit and credit totals are equal,
  • All required fields are populated correctly, and
  • All values in the CSV are valid,

…the issue may actually lie in how the entries are structured or formatted in the CSV file.

The system processes journal entry lines sequentially, meaning it expects the order of debits and credits to be logically grouped. If, for example, debit lines are listed first, then credit lines must follow without any further debit lines afterward. Alternating or out-of-order entries can disrupt the system's ability to validate the balance, even if the totals are correct.

Howdy, Stranger!
