I apologize for the length of this question.
BACKGROUND:
Our small company does many different types of work. Our owner wants to know if we are making money on each type. We track much (but not all) of our Revenue & Direct Costs using the Project capabilities in NetSuite. We use the CLASS feature to track the types of work. We have 19 different CLASSES.
PROBLEM:
When we POST TiME at the end of the month, NetSuite is posting to each project, the employee’s default CLASS from their EMPLOYEE RECORD. We created a custom field named PROJECT TASK CLASS for each of the Project Tasks, and would like that field’s information to be used when an employee charges to a PROJECT and the POST TIME routine is run.
OTHER INFORMATION:
We understand that this functionality can also be achieved using SERVICE ITEMS. However, we have 37 SERVICE ITEMS. If we must create a SERVICE ITEM & CLASS relationship for each pairing, that would be over 700 SERVICE ITEMS. Not very efficient.
We also understand that we could use the EMPLOYEE>UPDATE TIME ENTRY feature to modify the entries prior to POST TIME. Many Projects have multiple Project Tasks and this too would be time consuming.
WHAT I’VE TRIED:
I added two columns to our custom Time Tracking Form.
The first (hidden) column (unsuccessfully) attempts to display the PROJECT TASK CLASS custom field for the PROJECT TASK that the employee selects on their timesheet.
The second column would be the built-in CLASS field that, on PROJECT entries, would look to the 1st column for its Source data. The DISPLAY TYPE for this column would be Disabled so as not to allow the employee to modify the information. This too was unsuccessful.
If anyone can give me a solution to what I’ve tried or, better yet, a simpler more elegant solution, it would be much appreciated.
