NSC | Why Lease Interest Is Posted to Accumulated Depreciation Instead of Interest Expense
When reviewing lease-related journal entries, it may seem unusual to see Accumulated Depreciation – Right-of-Use Asset debited instead of Interest Expense in the Lease Interest Journal. However, this behavior is not an error, it is driven by how the lease is classified within the system.
In a recent case involving asset, the system posted the interest journal entry to Accumulated Depreciation. Upon investigation, it was found that the asset type assigned to this record is configured as an Operating Lease, with the corresponding checkbox enabled. This configuration directly determines how lease interest is recorded.
According to SuiteAnswers 82502 | Recording Lease Interest, the system generates lease interest journal entries based on the classification of the lease. These entries are automatically created for lease payments that do not yet include interest and are dated on or before the specified transaction date.
