Different default values for parent and bottom level nodes

I have a property which needs to have different default value for parent level nodes versus leaf level nodes.  I should be able to do this by setting up 2 separate properties with the individual default values and associate them with 2 different node types. 

Is there a better way to achieve this ?  Specifically I would like to avoid creating 2 properties.
