Looking for guidance on re-engineering of current EPM jobs.

My team is beginning the process of changing our EPM job automation scripting for from Kornshell scripting that was calling EPMAutomate to python script. In doing so, we've approached an impasse, where we are undecided about using Python with RestAPI calls or Python with shell script calls to EPMAutomate. Are there any immediate benefits of using either/or? I believe the encapsulation of EPMAutomate is the primary reason for it's general recommendation, as well as all of the built-in commands, but is just calling the API any less of a viable option? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated to get some
