Without using kits functionality, is there anyway we can explode an assembly item in an SO

Summary:

We ship an assembled unit instead of components but do not sell it as one single unit instead we sell the parts, so parts are SO line items. We provide warranty on parts and not the assembled unit & this assembled unit is not a kit item either.

Is there any OOB feature in OM using which we can explode the top level item into its components. Components list run into tens & hundreds at times. Appreciate any pointers or solutions which you might have deployed in your projects.
